Most times in life, even if you end up being tremendously successful in your chosen career, you end up thinking about what it would have been like if you had chosen other paths, how good you would have been there, in a different career, how different your life would have been in a completely different situation. Some of these sensations are sometimes explored by hobbies, but in some careers you can be so absorbed and busy that you don't have time to dedicate, for example, to preparing a classic car, and then organizing expeditions or races with it to you get to train for motorsport races and participate there. Well, there is such a rally in the world, which is usually attended by people who are very busy in other careers, who wish they were racing drivers, and who want to feel that experience without the hassle of logistics and without the time allocated for restorations and preparations.
A safari rally and expedition enthusiast, Francis Tuthill was himself a rally driver, with a distinguished career spanning more than two decades. That's how he developed a special passion for classic Porsche 911s, considering them the pinnacle of engineering, and that's how he got the idea to modify them for safari rallies. Of course, the idea of 911s that can go in rallies does not belong to him, but to those from Porsche, since 1986 they have been participating in the Dakar. But for a long time Porsche did not create other such versions, and only in 2022 it launched a new 911 Dakar. About 10 years ago, however, Francis Tuthill began to materialize his ideas in modified versions of classic Porsche 911s.
The cars created by his workshop began to attract the attention of some collectors, and Francis periodically participated with them in some rallies, proving that what he creates not only looks good, but can withstand the conditions of a rally. Those who ordered his cars started to be interested in recommendations to try their cars more thoroughly. And inevitably everything led to the idea by which Tuthill started organizing real safari rallies for those who had cars created by him.
The last such rally, for example, took place in 2022, and it has already reached the amplitude of an event with large-scale logistics, organized professionally in the smallest detail. Tuthuill and his team took the cars to Africa, provided a truck with only spare tires and other trucks with logistics, parts, mechanics, night breaks and everything that can be needed in a rally. Thus, the owners of these Tuthill-prepared Porsches, in addition to the hundreds of thousands of euros, and sometimes over a million, paid for finding rare classic editions and turning them into rally cars, flew directly to Kenya, landing their planes charter at an improvised airport, and there everything was already organized for them, for another fabulous amount paid for this experience.
For these people it meant a vacation from the day job, which they spent driving their modified Porsche in true rally conditions, with strict rules and a motorsport spirit. And the entire rally is not just a simulation of harder conditions, to tickle the pride of those who participate. It's a full-fledged safari rally, with difficult segments, with co-drivers who have to navigate carefully, with risks of accidents and with penalties for those who break the rules of motorsport. So, a full-fledged motorsport race, somewhere among conditions of magnificent relief, in which the person behind the wheel can feel what his life would have been like, if he had chosen the career of a pilot and followed his passion, instead of being a CEO- the company he runs today, for example.
By the way, the great rally driver Ken Block was also invited to participate in the 2022 edition, who also enjoyed the entire experience in Kenya during this safari rally. The video was published shortly before the sudden death of Ken Block, so in it we can see him still full of life and always ready for such eccentric experiences.
And then, the whole film, even though it is over an hour long, manages to capture you tightly in the atmosphere of this independent rally in Africa. It's a safari rally, in magnificent relief conditions, with classic Porsche 911s, driven not necessarily by the most experienced drivers, but clearly with an immense passion for them.
