McLaren launched the most powerful and lightest model ever in its range. In a world of increasingly heavier cars, it's intriguing to hear that a supercar manufacturer has not only added more power to a new model, but also made it lighter, noticeably lighter than the competition. In fact, McLaren says that the new 750S is 193 kg lighter than the model's closest competitor!
The dry weight of the car, that is without oil and other liquids necessary for operation — usually mentioned as a benchmark by Italian supercar manufacturers — is only 1,277 kg (2,815 lbs). If we were to take into account the car with oils and 90% gasoline in the 72-liter tank, according to the DIN standard, it would be 1,389 kg (3,062 lbs), as far as we understand from the press release from McLaren, which is anyway 30 kg (13,5 lbs) lighter than the previous model, the McLaren 720S coupe.
The new McLaren 720S debuted in two bodies — coupe and spider — and the convertible is only 49 kg (22,2 lbs) heavier than the coupe, weighing 1,326 kg (2,923 lbs) in "dry" form.
This low weight is achieved thanks to the monocoque core structure, made of carbon fiber, but also the care for every kilogram that can be saved, everywhere. The new 10-spoke wheels are the lightest ever fitted to a McLaren, helping to reduce overall weight by 13.8 kg (6,2 lbs). The instrument panels are 1.8 kg (0,8 lbs) lighter, the windshield is 1.6 kg (0,7 lbs) lighter, the seats are 17.5 kg (7,9 lbs) lighter, and the shock absorbers and springs are another 2 kg (0,9 lbs) lighter. By the way, each clamshell chair ended up weighing only 3.35 kg (1,5 lbs)!
The new McLaren 750S remains faithful to a puritan recipe in the propulsion system as well. The model is equipped with a 4.0-liter V8 biturbo engine, located in the middle, the power of which is suggested by the name of the model — 750 HP.
Its maximum torque reaches 800 Nm (590 lb ft), and these parameters are enough to accelerate the car from 0 to 100 km/h in only 2.8 seconds (0-60 mph in. 2.7 seconds)!
Starting from a standing start, the new McLaren 750S reaches 200 km/h (124 mph) after only 7.2 seconds! And 300 km/h (186 mph) is reached in less than 20 seconds after starting!
