From 1982 to the present, with the exception of the pandemic years, the Worthersee festival has become a legendary event for modified car enthusiasts, for 40 years it is often listed as the main event of its kind. Now, however, the municipal authorities of the small town of Maria Worth, where the event took place, have announced that they are rejecting the request of the festival organizers and will no longer allow it to be held in their city, for the reason that they no longer want conglomerations of cars with internal combustion engines , because such conglomerations do not align with the city's environmental targets.
The festival brought an enormous number of tourists to the city, or, if in 1982 it had gathered 100 visitors, then in recent years their number was in the order of hundreds of thousands, many of them staying in the city and in many other villages and towns nearby .
The festival was also called "the GTI meeting" because it was often dominated by VW GTI owners of all generations, but any other modified and customized cars were always welcome.
Now the city of Maria Worth says it will organize those spaces near Lake Worth so that they can be used for events with more environmentally responsible cars, if someone wants to organize them.
We don't know if anyone will want to organize an electric car festival here, but it is clear that this decision marks the end of an era for this festival.
