Honda has had a long list of glorious engines for its motorcycles throughout history, with formidable engineering even in the small displacement segment. And now the Japanese announce the creation of a new Hornet engine, of only 755 cubic cm, but with a phenomenal yield.
The new engine is a 4-stroke, with two cylinders positioned in parallel, and has a crankshaft with a cycle of 270 degrees. The parallel principle means that both pistons move in parallel during combustion, not in diametrically opposed positions. So far, the principle of parallel piston movement is not new in the world of motorcycle engines. But the new Honda engine has uneven ignition and 270 degree engine stroke, which means that in a cycle of two revolutions of the crankshaft, totaling 720 degrees, the first cylinder generates combustion at 0 degrees, and the next one on 270 degrees, leaving a gap of 450 degrees until the first cylinder's repeated combustion.
The engineers mention that the uneven ignition combined with the 270 degrees cycle, gives a pulsing sensation that is exceptionally pleasant to drive. In addition, they also carefully designed the manifold and exhaust to bring out the right notes of sound from the engine for the ultimate driving pleasure. Again, the 270 degree principle is not an absolutely new one in the world of motorcycle engines either, only that here everything has been done with light materials, with a lot of attention to combustion efficiency and a lot of emphasis on driving pleasure and ensuring a generous torque over the entire rev range, including medium revs.
Thus, the most fascinating part is the final performance that the Japanese engineers managed to achieve on the new engine, using all these ambitious engineering principles, calibrated in a new world. Honda's current 745cc engine develops a maximum power of 58 hp. The new Hornet engine, however, is capable of delivering 92 hp and 75 Nm! So, 92 hp, from a naturally aspirated engine of only 755 cubic cm!
So, once the Japanese engineers announced that the new engine is ready for series production, we can expect it very soon on the first Honda motorcycles. See below and a short video published by Honda with the new engine.
