There are things in the automotive world that are done with an overflowing passion, and the product resulting from the hands of those engineers makes you respect and adore it from the first. We are talking about such an absolutely exceptional car today. It is a new creation based on the classic Mercedes 600 SEL W140, with modified and improved engineering, in the hands of a former AMG engineer and his current team.
The new creation is called RENNtech S76R, and few of us may have heard about the RENNtech workshop. It's a workshop in Florida, USA, founded back in 1989 by the engineer Hartmut Feyhl. This engineer worked for 12 years at AMG back when the workshop was independent, being the technical director responsible for North America, namely he is considered to be the main promoter of the design and launch of the Mercedes W124 AMG in American guise, the so-called Hammer.
Well, in the meantime his workshop has developed a reputation for modifying classic Mercedes, this reputation being supported above all by the fans' respect for the engineering talent of Hartmut Feyhl. And now this engineer and his team have released perhaps their most fascinating creation yet, the S76R.
As I said, it's a Mercedes S-Class W140, in the S600 engine, with a V12 engine under the hood. The original engine is 6.0 liters, but now it is bored to have a displacement of 7.6 liters! More than that, the engine remained naturally aspirated, and its creator says that the V12 sound without a turbine is simply magnificent. He also says that these engines used to be simply indestructible.
The modified 7.6-liter V12 engine now develops 615 hp. The maximum torque reached 703 lb-ft (950 Nm) and all this from a V12 engine from the 90s, with a little improvement and enlarging the cylinder capacity, without any turbocharger!
The car can accelerate to the first hundred now in about 5 seconds, and it does it with a divine sound, thanks to a new exhaust system. Those from RENNtech made sure that the other performance components were also modified, including installing modern and high-performance brakes on this W140.
The modernizations reached the interior as well, where new materials were put in, while preserving the classic design. The resulting car is simply sublime, and would delight any fan of the model and the cars of that period.
