The current Lamborghini SUV, ithe Urus, has managed to achieve phenomenal sales success, accounting for more than 50% of the Italian brand's sales today. But unlike Ferrari or Maserati or other supercar brands, which have to apologize for new SUV launches, perceived as "betrayal", Lamborghini doesn't have to, because it had the LM002 in its history , its first SUV, released 37 years ago!
The history of the launch of the LM002 was curious, but the car has an engineering that still seems fascinating and improbable today. Under the hood is a V12 engine, taken from the legendary Countach!
It has 5.4 liters and produces 450 hp! Imagine how extravagant the idea of having an SUV with a V12 engine and 450 HP sounded in 1986!
Well, the car was super wide, weighed 2.7 tons empty and had advanced offroad capabilities, while managing to reach 210 km/h on asphalt! And inside, the car provided perfect luxury, a bit old-fashioned even then, with square and big buttons, but still, worthy of a Lamborghini. By the way, only 328 LM002s were produced!
The author of Seen Through Glass YouTube channel managed to go to Lamborghini's headquarters to drive an LM002 on some narrow Italian tracks alongside the brand's current SUV, the Urus. The result was a direct and curious comparison between two Lamborghini SUVs, created in two different eras, more than 30 years apart!
