In recent years, the Car of the Year awards in Europe and then the World Car of the Year, usually awarded at the New York motor show in the spring, have given birth to some controversies about how fair the choices were. Yesterday, however, the much-desired title of Wolrd Car of the Year was awarded in New York to the Hyundai Ioniq 6, a model that, this time, really deserves the title, and we will explain why.
First of all, because it embodies the major progress made by the Hyundai people in the direction of electric cars, with advanced batteries, 800V architecture, fast charging, more than decent power, superb autonomy and is, in general, a car designed for a lifestyle of the present and the future — with a central tunnel designed for the convenience of a laptop and working on it from the inside, but also with power functions from the car to a laptop from outside or even to an entire house.
But the biggest achievement of the Hyundai Ioniq 6 is that it is the first mass electric model, which marks a turning point in the world of electric cars that says stop to the absurd growth of batteries for long autonomy, and opts for classic Tatra-era aerodynamics as the basic philosophy and for low weight for efficiency. An aerodynamic car will consume less. If it consumes less, it will need a smaller battery. If the battery is smaller, it will be lighter and if the car is lighter, then again, it will consume less. It is a synergy between these elements, which the Hyundai Ioniq 6 manages to bring in a superb way to the world of electric cars. And all this is done by obtaining at the end a fascinating well-integrated product, with a design that is one of the most successful of everything launched in the automotive world in the last year.
Therefore, yes, precisely such cars that bring about a real big change in thinking and technology should deserve car of the year awards. And it's no wonder that the Hyundai Ioniq 6 won not only the big title, but also two more titles in the categories of World Electric Vehicle in the World Design of the Year. It deserves them all. And those from Hyundai had a similar performance last year with the Ioniq 5. So other manufacturers, who still apply half measures in their new models, should take some notes now and draw conclusions.
