The BMW R63 is a lesser-known motorcycle model, because it was produced earlier and in fewer copies. Only advanced connoisseurs of the chronology of BMW models know that this model had a decisive influence on many subsequent BMW models, for decades in a row, and even to this day motorcycles such as the R18 have elements and philosophy derived from this model.
The BMW R63 was launched back in 1928 and was the first BMW model to have an engine with overhead valves. It was an air-cooled, two-cylinder, 750cc boxer engine, and for many sidecar motorcycle enthusiasts, this might also remind of the Ural. And as we know, the Ural was cloned from a later BMW model that had the same engine concept.
In 1928, however, such engines were an absolute rarity. This BMW engine developed 25 hp and was connected to a 3-speed gearbox, and the power was transmitted to the rear wheel via a cardan shaft. The model produced a sensation in its time, being one of the most expensive and the most performing, managing to reach motorsport competitions as well.
By the way, the BMW R63 had an interesting construction of the front suspension, with small leaf springs, which ensured the effect of damping and absorption.
The motorcycle we are talking about today was manufactured in 1929 and was delivered to an owner in Switzerland. It was equipped with a rare sidecar, produced by Royal Seitenwagen, which forms a beautiful complement to its design.
The BMW R63 remained in the property of the first Swiss buyer until after the Second World War, thus being protected from the attrocities of the time. After that it was owned by a collector for a long time, after which it was bought by another collector and displayed statically in his museum.
Therefore, the motorcycle has a formidable history. But at the same time, the fact that it has been exposed more statically and has not been ridden intensively for many times, means that a future owner should give it an extensive technical reanimation, to ensure the longevity of this motorcycle.
But this BMW R63 is basically in pristine condition. And looking at it, it's almost unbelievable that we're talking about a motorcycle produced 93 years ago!
And you know what else is really incredible? The fact that only 794 units of the BMW R63 were produced during its career of only two years! So, not even a thousand such motorcycles, and how many of them survived for 93-94 years remains something we can intuit with approximation. It is certain, however, that such a collector's motorcycle is an absolute rarity.
The motorcycle will be sold at an auction house, however, on November 26, 2022. It does not have a minimum price set, but it is clear that the real price will go very high, for such a special piece!
