If almost a decade ago, Ferrari announced that it would never produce an SUV, now, at the launch of Purosangue, the Italians mentioned about the new model that this is definitely not an SUV and should not be called that way. And, to be fair, there is a great deal of truth in that, as the new Ferrari model, although it has all-wheel drive and a suspension capable of running on the Tuscan dirt, has not the slightest claim or desire to venture into the mud alongside of machines created for this. And what is absolutely indubitable is the historic moment that the new Ferrari Purosangue marks in the history of the Italian brand.
The car is officially presented as the first Ferrari model with 4 seats (so not 2+2, but 4 full seats) and it really has a silhouette that doesn't want to look like an SUV in the slightest. The new Ferrari model is only 1.59 meters high. Purosangue is 4.97 meters long and 2.03 meters wide, so it is very long and very wide, and against the background of these dimensions, the height is diluted in an exceptionally sporty silhouette, which the notion of an SUV no longer fits.
Also, Ferrari engineers say that they could not accept for their car an ordinary positioning of the engine, as in the case of SUVs, when it practically sits over the front axle and gives a not exactly desirable balancing of the car. So the engineers positioned the engine behind the front axle, in the configuration usually called mid-front.
This arrangement is already classic in some Ferrari models and has been kept here with the same 4RM-S all-wheel drive principle once used in the FF and GTC4Lusso. The gearbox, an 8-speed double clutch, is positioned on the rear axle, being connected to the engine with a shaft, in a transaxle formula. That gearbox sends torque to the rear wheels. So how do the front wheels get torque? Through a power transfer module, positioned in front of the engine, which is effectively an additional two-speed gearbox. The two gearboxes are managed together, and the front gearbox has gear 1 engaged while the rear gearbox is engaged in gear 1 or 2. Then, in gears 3 and 4 of the rear gearbox, the front gearbox engages gear 2. From gear 5 up of the rear box, the car becomes rear wheel drive, and the front wheels are decoupled.
That allowed a weight distribution of 49% front and 51% rear. The total weight of this nearly 5-meter Ferrari is only 2,033 kg. And the engine under the hood is a superb 6.5-liter V12, naturally aspirated, which develops 725 hp at 7,750 rpm and 716 Nm at 6,250 rpm. Thus, the new Ferrari model has officially robbed the Aston Martin DBX707 of the title of the most powerful SUV in the world, a title that Aston did not deserve, in fact. The new Ferrari Purosangue accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.3 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of over 310 km/h (193 mph)!
The interior is a separate work of art. And, just as in the case of Pagani Utopia , Ferrari Purosangue also has no central display! Will there be a new trend in which cars that will be legendary in the future will get rid of large central displays? It is certain that the interior of this Ferrari is superb and authentic, with many curious design elements.
And the back seat, as the Italians promise from the start, offers two more decent seats for two adults.
